Emergency services took to the water to rescue Rotary Club members in a staged exercise to thank them for a special donation.

Staffordshire’s Search and Rescue Team who are newly trained to rescue people in water as well as land, were on hand to show the club how they work – and also thank them for donating money for three new dry suits.

At Chasewater Sailing Club during the week, president of The Rotary Club of Cannock, David Marklew, along with junior vice president Allan Rotchell threw themselves into the role – and wearing the new suits, waited for the SSART to come to their rescue.

Resuer Steve Harris said they were grateful to be able to show off their new skills, and alos the £1245 donated to them by the club.

“We are self funded and all our volunteers in the SSART are recent, out of the 60 volunteer search technicians, 40 of us were given in total 800 hours of training on water searches and rescues. It has only been in the last six months where everything has come together and we have got all the equipment, he said. The SSART have in the past year attended 18 call outs by the emergency services, and since December 4, carried out four water searches.

WaterAid night

An entertaining and informative talk was given on 14th March by Paul Fisher from WaterAid UK and Seven Trent Water. Rotarian’s enjoyed a talk about how to make a simple and clean toilet for 3rd world country’s. Also, the club were reminded how important water is to the world population and that billions of people were still absent of water and sanitation facilities.

member of the rotary Club of Cannock. The new member David is an accountant and lives in Heath

Hayes with his wife Karen. Mr Gardiner was warmly welcomed by the Club members.

2012 10k run over Cannock Chase

‘The 3rd Cannock Rotary Run over Cannock Chase starts at 11am on November the 18th. Don’t miss this road race on a tough but enjoyable accurately measured course. Last years entry was up 19% over 2010 with 262 signing up to take part. You can enter on the day or via this link.

Christmas Concert with Newlife Charity

New Life are once again organising a Christmas Concert in conjunction with Chadsmoor Choral Society. This year’s event is on Thursday 13th December at The Civic Ballroom in Cannock at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7.50 each or £5.50 each for over 65s and under 16s. Refreshments will be available on the night. The Concert will follow a similar format to last year’s with a mixture of songs from the shows and carols. 2012 – 10k Run, all welcome!!

This is the time to get training for Cannock Chase’s big run event. This years run will be starting from The Visitor Centre, Marquis Drive, WS12 4PW over scenic Cannock Chase. The date is now set as Sunday November 18th. Please email us if you need details. The time to beat from 2011 is 36 minutes, 46 seconds. The Rotary Club of Cannock will host a barbecue on the morning of the event offering food, snacks and drinks to competitors and their families. Car parking is available free of charge, and there are toilets available some 600 metres away at the Cannock Chase Visitor Centre. Public Liability Insurance is provided under the Rotary Club’s policy, and there will be paramedics in attendance on the day.

Rotarian’s enjoyed a Car Treasure hunt last Sunday followed by a wonderful BBQ at the Presidents Home. The weather was perfect and the food enjoyed under parasols in the 2012/13 presidents garden.

Tony’s walk to work and back, 153 miles.

Cannock Rotarian Tony lives in Cannock, Staffordshire and works at Clock Towers Shopping Centre, Rugby, Warwickshire and his daily commute to work is 50.3 miles each way along the M6 Toll and M6.Tony’s challenge on the Monday the 14th May was to Walk to Work which took 2 days to arrive in Rugby on Tuesday 15th May and on Wednesday morning Tony was at work as normal in the Shopping Centre, his return to home started on Thursday 17th May retuning home on the Sunday morning after covering 153 miles!

Tony raised more than £600 for Dystonia and Kellys Wheelchair Fund.
