Cannock Rotarians donated £1000 of fund raising money from recent events and personal donations to Jo and Kaisers off road wheelchair appeal. This has enabled Jo to have the off road buggy and Kaiser is now able to come off his lead and chase Jo all over the countryside. Well done to everyone.
2011 ended on a high when Santa came to a 3 day collection at Cannock Asda store attended also by Rotary Club Members. Thanks to the generosity of Cannock shoppers at the ASDA store, a huge £1580 has been raised. The sum will benefit Charity’s and causes over the next few months. Santa was very pleased to see so many well behaved Cannock children.
Unused spectacles may be deposited at the collection box in Cannock Hospital. Over the last few weeks a full sack has been collected. These spectacles are delivered to ‘Vision Aid Overseas‘ who in turn refurbish and distribute them. Glasses are sorted at Crawley and sent to five prisons around the UK where inmates have been trained to clean, grade and package the glasses for use on international programmes.
A wonderful presentation was given of the recent work by Laura Brown from Therapies Unite. Laura is a local qualified physiotherapist who took part in a three month self funded placement as part of a volunteer physiotherapy unit in Mexico. Laura treated disabled children and adults with musculoskeletal and neurological problems to improve their mobility and provide them with access to healthcare that they would otherwise not be able to afford.
Laura returned to the UK and was inspired to set up Therapies Unite, with a goal to set up a permanent volunteer project that places skilled and qualified professionals in communities that will benefit most from their expertise.
Laura plans to return to Mexico in December for many months, any professional or sponsorship help would be welcome. Cannock Rotarians donated £100 funding towards Therapies Unite’s 2012 projects.
Cannock Rotarians donated £311 this month to a joint project on behalf of BDF newlife to purchase special equipment for a project for an individual in the Cannock area.
An entertaining and informative talk was given on 7th September by a Cannock Rotarian Member. Alan presented to us the charity that he and his wife Manage.
Action Kenya is a small charity run to help poor people in coastal Kenya. One of the projects is to improve the conditions at Gede School for Physically Disabled and Deaf Children and to find sponsors for the children. If you are interested in sponsoring a child, please get in touch with Action Kenya.
Cannock Rotary Club donated £100 towards a total raised amount of £540 for a Charity Skydive with the “Sky Tigers” on behalf of the Army Benevolent Fund. The Sky Tigers are experienced parachutists from The Princess of Wales’s Royal Regiment’s Parachute display team.
Local Rotarians flipped the burgers at the the recent Cannock Town Carnival BBQ. Every one enjoyed the food and the function raised a fantastic £140 towards funds at the Church.
Members of Cannock Rotary Club will be exercising skills in taking down the left over tents at the forthcoming V festival. This annual event is coordinated by all Rotary local clubs. The recovered tents are passed to ‘International Aid‘ and provide emergency shelter for people.
At their meeting last night (Wednesday 14th) the members of the Rotary Club of Cannock heard a report concerning the difficulties being suffered by thousands of people in the 
. Many of us will have seen this reported on the television.
This impending humanitarian disaster can only be averted by the swift intervention of the various aid agencies that are already on the ground, they of course need immediate financial support.
After brief discussion the Club voted to donate £1000 from its reserves to be sent immediately to the Disasters Emergency Committee to assist with providing much needed food and medicines to the people in the refugee camps in Kenya.
The Club had also recently received a £200 donation from the Staff at the Clock Towers Shopping Centre in Rugby, to be used for Rotary charitable purposes, it was felt appropriate to add this to the donation making a total of £1200.
A cheque has been sent from the Club today (Thursday 15th) to the Disasters Emergency Committee.
Club President Mel Morgan said
“We are delighted to be able to offer immediate assistance to these people at this time of great need, Cannock Rotary Club will continue to observe the situation and we will respond as appropriate to further calls for assistance. This may well require fund raising events and as always the support of members of the public will be much appreciated”.
Across the world Rotary Clubs will be responding to this emergency as they do to all others; in the last 12 months or so aid has been sent to Japan, New Zealand, Pakistan and Haiti.
The new web site could not miss a mention about the award of £22,600 to Birches Valley Gymnastics Club last December 2010. The Rotary Club of Cannock had made its biggest donation ever to this local project. Mel Morgan (President Elect) Centre Peter Barke (President) Right David Marklew (Past President).
